Please note that the schedule for competitions is subject to change.
MTL BAL JAM wants to prioritize social dancing! As such, we will make sure that competitions run smoothly and that they do not interfere with the social dance more than they have to. That being said, we have many prizes and surprises planned for competitors, and we can say with absolute confidence that our competitions will be a treat for everyone whether you are watching or participating!
Music
Every song is carefully picked by our team of DJs, and will follow the standards of international balboa competitions. If there are many heats in the prelims, we will make sure to have similar songs and tempos across heats so that everyone gets a fair chance.
Open Mix & Match
Price: $25.00
Prelims
When: Friday, June 20, 2025, at 8:30 PM
Tempo: 180 to 220 BPM / song
You register on your own, are judged individually, and dance with a different partner for each song.
Finals
When: Saturday, June 21, 2025, around 10:00 PM
Tempo: 190 to 230 BPM / song
The finals will take place in dual spotlights to give all finalists a chance to shine, and there will be a partner rotation mid-song without interrupting the dance. There will be an all-skate on live music at the end with partner rotations without interrupting the dance. You will be judged individually.
Pure Balboa Strictly
Price: $40.00
Format: Tap-out
When: Friday, June 20, 2025, during the late-night dance (around 1:30 AM)
A new addition for the 2025 edition of MTL BAL JAM! We love Pure Balboa and are excited to invite you to participate in our Late-Night Strictly Pure Balboa competition. You register with a partner and dance until one of our judges eliminates you. The last couple standing wins!
Slow Balboa Strictly
Price: free
Format: Tap-in (prelims) & Tap-out (finals)
When: Sunday, June 22, 2025, around 11:00 PM
Simply step onto the dance floor with your partner and show us your most delightful Slow Balboa. Finalists will be selected using a Tap In format, and then the last couple standing takes the win!
